Known as Chadar 2.0, the Markha Valley trek comes closest to what Chadar has to offer. However, both are different and unique in their own ways. Located in Ladakh, both the treks offer magnificent landscapes, wildlife and of course, a frozen river! Contrasting yet similar, one might be left wondering which one to attempt given all that these two treks have to offer. We are not going to lie, it is indeed a difficult choice to pick between two of the best winter treks in the country. However, there are a few points that distinguish these trails from one another. Based on your experience and preferences, one might just trump the other! This article lays out the distinguishing factors between Chadar and Markha Valley treks to make it easier for you to decide on which trail you would like to venture on this winter!

Chadar or Markha Valley?

Difficulty Level

Markha Valley is rated BRS 4 on the Bikat Rating Scale whereas Chadar is rated BRS 5. Although both are almost equally challenging given the terrain and freezing temperatures, Chadar can be a tad bit more difficult. The trail in Markha Valley is more varied with boulder crossings, trekking on well paved paths along with a walk on the frozen river as opposed to Chadar which involves walking on the frozen Zanskar river for almost the entirety of the trail. And mind you it is no walk in the park to navigate around a frozen river. Further, if you wish to attempt Chadar, it is mandatory to have the experience from multiple high altitude treks up your sleeve to be eligible. You can understand more about the difficulty rating and the Bikat Rating Scale here.

Trekkers on the Trail

Chadar, having a narrow window of mid January to mid February, when the river is fully frozen, tends to see a heavy influx of trekkers during this season. Trekkers from around the world come to walk the frozen Zanskar river during this time, given its reputation among adventure junkies. In contrast to this, Markha Valley remains an unconventional choice for winter trek enthusiasts. It offers everything that Chadar does and more! With stunning views of Himalayan mountains in the Ladakh region and the frozen Markha river accompanying the scenery, this trek is the perfect choice for anyone who wishes to challenge themselves and beat the crowds of Chadar!

Terrain

The reason Chadar has a certain reputation is due to its unique trail over a frozen river. No other trek offers a 9 day walk over frozen turquoise waters which truly is an experience to cherish for a lifetime. Not only this, the Chadar trek is also home to icy landscapes and frozen waterfalls, making it nothing short of a winter wonderland!

Markha Valley on the other hand has many variations during the trail. No day’s walk or hike is the same and the landscape changes from lush green farm patches to dry arid lands that take you to Kang Yatse I and II. Predominantly flat, the Markha Valley trek has few moderate ascents and descents that follow. A few boulder crossings, well paved paths, ascents through scree and moraine, and traversing the frozen river make Markha Valley an all encompassing winter trek.  Ladakhi culture takes a forefront on this trail, with trekkers getting to witness religious settlements high up in the mountain passes along with the warm smiles from the locals who reside in these extreme conditions.

Flora and Fauna

I would be stating the obvious if I said you will not spot any vegetation on the Chadar trail. Given the terrain and geographical features that surround the frozen Zanskar river, it is impossible for any kind of vegetation to grow around the area. The sub zero temperatures and icy landscapes freeze everything in their way, almost as if someone cast a spell! However, if we are lucky, we could spot one of the most mystical creatures that roam these high mountains, the snow leopard. Known as a ghost due to their extremely rare sightings, snow leopards are a sight to behold. You can probably consider it an achievement to spot one for there are very few in the world who would have! Ibex are also a common sighting in this region and their ability to move on 90 degree mountain walls is a spectacle in itself.

If we were to go by Peter Matthiesen who authored the book ‘Snow Leopard’, people travelled far and wide to get a glimpse of the blue sheep, which can only be found in the remotest and highest parts of the mountains. The Markha Valley trek is a gateway to spotting the blue sheep along with exotic birds like the Eurasian Magpie and whitecap redstart. Taking us through the Hemis National Park, the trail has a lot to offer if you are fascinated by fauna that is almost endemic to this region.

Campsites

The campsites of Chadar transport you back to prehistoric times. Caves in the Zanskar ranges that surround us offer shelter during the night as a burning campfire keeps us warm and adds to the black layer on the ceiling of the cave. Travelling locals sometimes greet us with hot butter tea that pretty much feels like the best thing in the world given the temperatures.Cave camping is a unique feature of the Chadar trek and is definitely an experience you would love if you enjoy the outdoors.

Campsites on the Markha Valley trek are similar to what you might see on most high altitude treks but mind you, most of them open into expanding views of Kang Yatse I and II. Imagine waking up to the glitter of sun over these peaks which makes the snow appear like molten gold! At times, we do also end up staying in a few homestays during the trail which has the added advantage of extra warmth and a good night’s sleep. Who doesn’t crave a cozy bed and blanket in sub zero temperatures?

The above are a few factors that you might want to consider if you are confused between Chadar and Markha Valley. Having laid out the distinguishing factors, we must say both the treks are a spectacular experience allowing you to bask in icy landscapes and the unique Ladakhi culture. We hope this article helps you make a more informed decision based on your interests and endurance!
