After learning how to attire and how to sit, the third step you will learn in the basic kayaking course is how to launch a kayak in water. The term ‘launching’ means, smoothly entering the kayak into the river from land. Once you get familiar with launching, the anticipation ends, and the adventure begins.
Here are the steps you need to follow:
Step 1: Check the location
Scout the area before setting up your kayak. The shores of white-water rivers vary in size and nature. Some are rocky, some are flat, and most are slant. Look for a smooth and ideal spot near shallow water to set the kayak.
Step 2: Place the kayak onshore
Place the kayak where forty percent of the body is on the shallow waters of the river and sixty percent of the back end on land.
Step 3: Check the placement of your paddle
Keep the paddle parallel and closer to the kayak. But, make sure you slightly place it away from the water for easy accessibility. When the force of the waves increases, the water level rises and washes away the paddle.
Step 4: Sit in and slide
Sit inside the kayak, and adjust the footrest & backrest. Once you get comfortable and ready, pick your paddle in one hand and place it vertically on the ground. Then lean forward, place your other hand on the ground and push to slide towards the water.
Step 5: Paddle and launch
After entering shallow waters, hold the paddle with both hands. Slightly move your hip and rock your kayak to check the balance. Now, start paddling. The momentum from paddling will launch your kayak into the depths.
Launching a kayak can be slightly confusing in the beginning. But don’t worry, it is only a matter of practice. If you have any question, do leave them below.
