Regulator Recovery is a common skill taught to people who sign up for Discover Scuba Diving and the Open Water Diver course. As a diver, it is important that you know how to recover the regulator in case it falls off from the seal of your mouth. Although this might sound difficult, it is one of the easiest skills you will learn as a scuba diver. This is one of the first skills that you will be taught during your pool training session. While your instructor will go through each step with you in the pool, this article will give you a basic understanding of regulator recovery underwater.
Steps to Follow
Step 1:
Take a deep inhalation from the regulator and remove the regulator from your mouth. You need not panic as you have inhaled sufficient air for you to recover your regulator.
Step 2:
Breathe out small bubbles into the water once the regulator is out of your mouth. Please remember that in no circumstances must you hold your breath underwater. It is also important that you breathe out in a slow and calm manner in order to ensure that you do not run out of air before recovering the regulator.
Step 3:
Toss the regulator behind your shoulder once it is out of your mouth. Lean to your right to touch your thigh.
Step 4:
Move your hand back to touch your tank. Once you touch the tank, move your hand upwards and bring it forward in a rotatory manner. The regulator should be on your arm.
Once recovered, the next step is to drain the water out of your regulator. Read How to Clear Your Regulator Underwater to know how it’s done.
