Often regarded as heaven on earth, trekking in Kashmir is on everyone’s bucket list. Sprawling meadows, glacial lakes, alpine forests and larger than life mountains all make Kashmir the perfect destination for trekkers. Come winters and the entire region is blanketed in snow, transforming it into a winter wonderland with breathtaking views. Trekking in winters in Kashmir can be rewarding with frozen lakes, snow covered meadows and towering mountains draped at every curve in thick white layers of fresh snow. While most famous treks in Kashmir span over 6-7 days, here are a few weekend winter treks in the region that you can check out.
Marchoi Trek
This moderate level trek starts from Narang village, located 45 km away from Srinagar. The trek covers a distance of 18 km and can be completed in 4 days, making it a perfect weekend getaway in the winters. The name of the trek is inspired from the Machoi Mountain, whose pinnacles rise well above 5000m. The initial parts of the route up to Dumail run parallel to the Wanght River after which the trail progresses into a pine forest. The pine forest marks the beginning of a gradual ascent all the way to the top of a meadow called Shadimarg. The highest point of this meadow is the end of the trail and is surrounded by valleys on all sides along with striking views of the Marchoi Valley from up top. The trek gives you up close visuals of snow covered pine trees, small glaciers and snow gullies which enhance the beauty of the trail.
Lidderwat Aru
Lidderwat Aru is a 9 km trek that allows you to travel from Aru Valley to Lidderwat Valley, which acts as an extension between Kolahoi and Tarsar Ranges. Spanning across 4 days, the trek takes you through Aru village, pine forests and snow filled valleys, making it an easy but exciting and worthwhile weekend affair. The semi-frozen Lidder river only adds to the beauty of the landscape. The trek has minimal elevation gain and can be comfortably completed even by beginners.
Kothpatri Winter Trek
Starting in Aru village, Kothpatri is a moderate level trek that can be completed in 3 days. The route will keep you surrounded by the Tarsar Ranges, Mt.Kolahoi and snow covered valleys as far as the eye can see. A gentle ascent leads you all the way to the foothills of Mt.Katernag. You will reach the end of the trail upon reaching a meadow that is covered with pine and cedar trees. This also serves as the highest point of the trek
Narang, Dumail Trek
A shorter version of Marchoi trek which can be completed in 2 days. This trek is perfect for beginners without prior experience, making it more accessible. Starting from Narang, at the point of an archaeological site and a Shiva Temple, the trail runs along the Wanght river and takes you to Dumail where the trail ends. Although short, the trail treats you to snow covered woods, snow bridges, icicles, semi-frozen river and snow gullies that make it an exciting winter adventure. The confluence of two rivers in Dumail marks the end of the trail and is perfect for a short weekend trip from Srinagar!
