Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be underwater and see what lies beneath? If yes, then Discover Scuba Diving is your gateway to the underwater world. This program is perfect for those who want to try scuba diving and get the experience of it without having to do a full certificate course. It also acts as a precursor to those who want to delve deeper into the world of diving to do their Open Water and Advanced Open Water courses. Discover Scuba Diving allows you to explore diving under the supervision of a dive professional after completing a pool training session to learn a few essential skills. The course takes you to the maximum depth of 12M in the ocean. By the end of the program, you would have taken your first breath underwater and seen what lies below the vast blue oceans! With scuba diving picking up as a popular choice for adventure lovers in India, we are offering the opportunity to explore the depths of the ocean in Puducherry, on India’s east coast. Closely located to Chennai, Puducherry is easily accessible by road from the airport and the railway station. Not only is it easy to reach but it is also a great diving destination if you are looking for some adrenaline rush. The waters off the coast of Puducherry offer good current and swell conditions for those who enjoy drift diving. The underwater world in Puducherry is rich in marine biodiversity allowing you to spot batfish, octopuses and even whale sharks if you are out on a lucky day! Unlike other dive destinations which are seasonal, Puducherry has suitable conditions for diving throughout the year. While diving activities are conducted on a regular basis, the best time to dive is between February to April for calm water conditions and high visibility underwater. There are no prerequisite skills for this program. One has to be above 10 years of age and in reasonably good physical health to sign up. Stay on this page for more information on the course and related activities.
In case you wish to take your scuba journey forward or if you are ready to jump directly into the certificate courses, we also offer the Open Water Diver and the Advanced Open Water Diver courses.
Basic Skills and Pool Training
Duration: 2-3 hours
The first day is reserved to make your way to Puducherry. Course activities begin after lunch but it would be best if you reach the city early in the morning so you have the time to settle in. The drive from the Chennai airport takes around 3 hours - the road goes by the sea, giving you a taste of the coastal life. The drive takes you through many small towns and villages with tea shops which can serve as worthy pit-stops, if you might need any. Once in Puducherry, you can check into your hotel and have lunch. If you are willing to explore, Puducherry is home to beautiful artisanal cafes and restaurants which offer a variety of cuisines.
Post lunch, we assist you to the dive shop to brief you about the program and all that is in store for you for the next two days. Once this is done, a dive professional takes your sizing to provide you with the perfect fit for your wetsuit, fins and snorkel mask. It is important to have the right size to ensure that your dive experience is comfortable and enjoyable.
You are then acquainted with the equipment that you will use during your dive. Discover Scuba Diving is an introductory program where you do not need to handle the majority of the equipment - a dive professional will do the same for you. However, it is important to know the purpose of each piece of equipment and how it functions for your knowledge and safety.
Shortly after, the pool training session begins. During the training, we wear all the equipment and learn a few essential skills including breathing underwater and mask clearance. While underwater, your regulator is your source of air essential to your breathing. You are taught how to breathe through it and clear it in case of water entry. You are also taught how to recover the regulator in the event that it falls off from the seal of your mouth. The next essential skill you learn is how to clear your mask in a situation where water trickles into it. Don’t worry! While it might sound overwhelming, these are only safe diving practices and skills that everyone should know before entering the water. They are also extremely easy to learn and our dive professionals are with you every step of the way. You can be assured that you will only feel more confident and comfortable in the water once you learn these skills.
Once the pool session is completed, you can help yourself to some refreshments that are provided to you at the dive shop. You can spend the rest of the evening exploring Puducherry’s beaches, French colonies and markets.
Guided Dive in the Ocean
Duration: 2-3 hours
Today we head out for the first dive in the ocean and finally put all the skills we learnt on Day 1 to actual use! To get to the diving site, we take a fun ride on a boat along with other divers. This is a great opportunity to interact with other divers and see if you would want to get into recreational or even professional diving! The boat ride could be a little rocky depending on the weather and water conditions on that particular day. If you are someone who experiences motion sickness, you could inform our dive professionals of the same and they will provide you with medicines to help with it. The boat is also be stocked with drinking water and snacks.
On arriving at the dive site, we put on our equipment and finally take the plunge! Your dive professional helps you reach the mooring line from where you descend underwater. Do not panic or get worried in case there is a strong current or swell in the ocean. Your equipment is specially designed to make you float and your dive professional is always there to take care of you. Once you start descending, remember to start equalising early and at regular intervals. This is something your dive professional will explain and guide you through.
Once at the bottom, your dive professional takes you around the dive site where you can witness the rich marine life and the fascinating world under water. Enjoy the dive site and soak in as much of it as possible. If you are diving in March or August, do look out for whale sharks which are majestic and a sighting of a lifetime. And remember, our dive staff is there to record your first moments underwater, so don’t forget to pose for the camera!
The dive lasts approximately 30-40 minutes depending on your level of comfort and air consumption. Your dive professional then helps you ascend and get onto the boat. Help yourself to plenty of water and snacks once you are on the boat. It is important to hydrate well after a dive.
To close the day, you are escorted to the dive shop where you can take a shower or you may even head back to your hotel. You can spend the day in Puducherry or drive back to Chennai to catch your onward flight. We will share your photos and videos from underwater as soon as possible for you to relish the magic you just experienced.
